As seen on the awesome Knot Bad blog last month, here is my Mermaid Triangle Scarf Crochet Pattern! I was very honored to be featured as a guest “Yarn Punk” on one of my favorite blogs in February, and the response that my Mermaid Scarf pattern received via this post (find it HERE!) was incredibly heartwarming for me! It means so much that Vincent featured my pattern, and I was thrilled at the outpouring of love that his readers showed for this scarf. It was an incredibly fun project for me to make, so I’m really happy that everyone else seems to be having fun with it, as well!

(Pin this pattern for later!)

I originally created the concept of this scarf as a companion to my Mermaid Hat Pattern (which you can find HERE!). Eventually, I want to create tons of different Mermaid themed projects – coffee cup cozies, mittens, backpacks, etc.! But next on the list was definitely a scarf – who doesn’t love a good hat/scarf combo?!

The scarf is worked up in a basic triangle scarf shape, but what makes this scarf so unique is the mermaid “scales” that are created using the Crocodile Stitch. This stitch has such a beautiful look and texture, and it’s not hard to make once you get the hang of it! I’ve included lots of photos here to help you out with that! To top it off, there’s a magical fin at the bottom of the scarf. After all, a mermaid project wouldn’t be complete without a mermaid tail!!

When designing this yarn, I knew I had to go with Caron Simply Soft Party again (that’s the same one I used for my Mermaid Hat). It’s medium weight, comes in all different kinds of colors, and most of all – it sparkles!! The one in the photos uses the Spring Sparkle colorway (find it on Amazon HERE!), which is a lovely bright green. I also think the scarf would look superb in Purple or Teal, as they are both very Mermaid-esque colors!!!

Who’s ready to get magical?! I know I am! Let’s get started on this scarf!

(Psst!! An ad-free PDF version of this pattern is for sale in my store HERE!)

Supplies
I / 5.25 mm hook
3 Skeins of Caron Simply Soft Party in Spring Green (approx 400 yds used for entire project) or worsted weight (weight class “4”) yarn
Yarn needle
Scissors

Abbreviations

*=Indicates the beginning / end of a section that will be repeated
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
BLO = back loop only
St = stitch
Croc st – crocodile stitch
Ch = chain
Rep = repeat
Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together

Size
About 14.5 inches in length (before fin) and 29 inches in width at top / widest point

Gauge
1 crocodile stitch across (at widest point) = about 1.5 inches, and 2 crocodile stitches (4 rows including 2dc cluster rows) = about 2” in length

Special Stitches Used
Crocodile stitch: 5 Dc around each post of a 2dc cluster; work needs to be turned in order to make 5 dc around second post.

Notes
Scarf is worked from bottom tip upwards, in alternating rows of 2dc cluster/dc rows, and croc st/sc rows. One increase occurs each row (either a 2dc cluster/dc increase, or croc st/sc increase).
At the end of each crocodile stitch row, work will already be turned from creating last croc st. At the end of each 2dc cluster row, work will not be turned until after the first half of the croc in the following row is made. Therefore, instructions do not include a “turn” at the end of each row.

Here is a diagram of the order in which the double crochet stitches of the crocodile stitch are worked:

    I just finished crocheting both this and your mermaid hat up as a gift for a friend for the holidays! The patterns were easy to follow once I figured out the crocodile stitch. Only problem? I can’t get the scales to lay flat and pretty like yours. Did you block on the hat or the scarf?

      Hi Ali, I’m so glad to hear that! Thank you for using my patterns!!! 😀 About the croc stitches – sometimes they curl a bit more if thicker yarn is used, or even just if the crochet stitches are a bit more loose than mine were. I’ve never tried blocking the hat or scarf before, but if you want to give it a try, let me know how it goes!! Thank you again 🙂 Melissa

      Hi Lynne! I’m excited to hear that you’ll be making a Mermaid Triangle Scarf! I used Caron Simply Soft Party for the ones you see in the photos, but those are all solid colors. For a multi-colored version, I’ve seen some lovely versions of my scarf made using Caron Cakes yarn, Red Heart Super Saver yarn (there are many varigated colorways), etc. I personally think some of the “cake” yarns are perfect for this scarf – they’re usually medium weight (which is what the pattern calls for) and they have some beautiful varigated tones! Caron Cakes, Premier Sweet Roll, and Lion Brand Mandala are good places to start! Hope that helps! ~ Melissa
