We all have that one afghan that our grandma made us using these squares – and let’s face it, it’s a great blanket! But granny squares have also made a huge comeback in recent years! These squares are so versatile that they can be used for just about anything – clothing, decor, you name it! Not to mention, they are basically the best stash busters ever invented! And if you’re looking for a new twist on a classic, these solid squares are just the thing!

Pin it for later!

A classic granny square has a sort of lacy, open look. I love classic granny squares, and I think these solid ones have all the charm of an open-look granny square, but with a modern flair! While the corners remain a bit more open, the rest of the square has a clean, tight look.

The projects I most enjoy using these squares for are blankets! Since I make granny squares that have quite a bit going on, such as my Rose Granny Squares, Sunflower Granny Square, and Fall Granny Squares, I like to be able to accent these squares with a very basic square to make them “pop”.

I used this exact square pattern to accent the Rose Granny Squares seen in this photo! Get the Rose Granny Square pattern HERE!

I also made a slightly altered version of this square (made in the larger size specified in the pattern) to accent the squares in my Farm Fresh Fall Blanket. Get that pattern HERE!

But the fun isn’t just limited to blankets – these squares could be used to make tote bags, pillows, covers for furniture, and more! They can also be personalized so much just by changing up the color variations. How beautiful it would be to make a project using specific baby colors, wedding colors, school/team colors, etc.! The possibilities are endless!

You could make these squares in any type of yarn as long as you can meet the gauge listed below, or just prefer the squares altered to be larger or smaller based on the type of yarn you’re using. But my favorite yarn to make them with is medium weight yarn! The stitches look nice and defined, and aren’t too fine or too chunky. You can find “Rust”, the color I used for my Fall Granny Square solid squares, on Amazon HERE! And if you’re looking for a rose/blush color like the solid squares made for my Rose Granny Square blanket, you can find a lovely color called “Pink” on Amazon HERE!

What will you make with your solid granny squares? I can’t wait to find out – please be sure to tag me on social media and leave a comment here so I can see your finished projects!

Let’s get started!

Notes
-In this pattern, clusters made up of 2 double crochet or half double crochet stitches, plus chain 3, plus another 2 double crochet or half double crochet stitches, are known as “corners”. When counting stitches at the end of a row, only count these as “corners”; do not count the individual stitches within the corners.

-Ch 2 does not count as a double crochet stitch in this pattern.

-To make the square 6 inches instead of 5.25, replace half double crochet stitches in Round 5 with double crochet stitches.
