Capitol Couture Newsboy Hat – Crochet Pattern
There’s nothing like a good chunky hat in the winter, but what if your hat could be both cozy and stylish?! This Newsboy style hat is cute, comfy, and fashion-forward! It’s also fast, easy and fun to make. It only uses one skein of yarn, so you can make your own newsboy hats in all different colors to match any outfit!

In my opinion, the best patterns are the ones that have special stories behind them. This hat is no exception! The title hints at the inspiration behind this hat. I live in the capitol city of New York State – Albany, NY. Last spring, Lion Brand Yarn hosted a contest focused on their “Hometown USA” line of yarn. Whoever took the best photo that included both a landmark in their hometown, as well as some Lion Brand yarn, won the contest. I decided to crochet the most notable landmark in my town – the New York State Capitol building!
This crocheted portrait was a labor of love and took a little while to finish, but was most definitely worth it! When I was all finished, I took photos of my finished work in front of the Capitol Building in downtown Albany. For good measure, I decided to make a fun hat out of Hometown USA yarn to wear in the photos, too – and hence, the Capitol Couture hat was born!
Weeks later I was contacted by Lion Brand Yarn, who generously awarded me First Place in their contest! The prize was a $100 gift card to their website, and naming rights to the newest colorway of Hometown USA yarn. I was so excited to spend my gift card, and thanks to this generous prize, I ordered many yarns that you’ve already seen used in patterns on my site – the Farm Fresh Fall Blanket, the Frog Hooded Blanket, etc. And there are still more to come using my prize yarn stash!!! Also, thanks to the awesome prize of naming rights for the newest yarn, you can look out for an “Albany” colorway of Hometown USA sometime in the future!
For now, I used another gorgeous colorway of Hometown USA called Providence Pink. You might recognize this yarn from my Caylin Scarf, as well! It’s a beautiful light peachy pink that has a lovely sheen. Find Providence Pink on Amazon HERE!
I also found that adding a large wood button to the band of the hat really makes the whole thing “pop”! Here’s a button similar to the one I used on Amazon – find it HERE!
I’d like to take a moment to thank Lion Brand Yarn for awarding me with first place for their Hometown USA contest! As many of my readers and fellow crafters know, I love using Lion Brand yarns in my patterns. I am so grateful for the opportunity to express my love for my hometown of Albany, NY! Albany is not where I was born, but I have claimed it as my hometown after living here for nearly five years. Out of all the places I’ve ever lived, it’s the one that feels most like home to me. And thanks to Lion Brand Yarn, Albany will be immortalized forever as a special skein of Hometown USA yarn! Also thanks to LBY, I have been able to make many fun patterns for my blog using all my lovely extra yarn!
So who’s ready to crochet a fun, easy, cute hat, Albany style?! Let’s go!!!!

Love this pattern. I want to make it 1 inch bigger. Can I make a row 4 B? As the designer what do you recommend I need 22 inches

Thank you so much! That’s a great question – if you want the hat to be wider and longer, another round after Rnd 3 is a good idea. About one extra increase/stitch (so 49 dc instead of 48) should yield close to an inch difference in circumference. If you don’t want the hat longer, but just want it wider, I would add one more dc to one of your increases in Rnd 3 (so again, 49 dc instead of 48). Hope that helps!! Thanks so much for using my pattern! ~ Melissa

Love this hat, I can’t wait to make a bunch. Was wondering about how many yards of the Lion Brand Hometown USA Yarn it uses, would 64 yards be enough? Thanks so much. 😀

Hi Rebecca! Thanks so much, I’m excited that you’ll be making lots of these hats! So I checked and one skein of Hometown is about 84 yds….and the hat takes just about the entire skein! So, you might be a bit short with 64 yds. Sorry!!! Thanks for asking and I hope you love the pattern! ~ Melissa

So confused on the last part. My flap doesn’t stick out like in the pic. It just lays flat on my head. So do I flip the flap up and see that to the hat and then sew the band to make it stick out like in the picture?

Hi Hammy, if the brim/flap isn’t standing up properly, it could be the kind of yarn you’re using and/or the tension of your stitches. If you’re using super bulky yarn and the hook that the pattern calls for, you might want to try pulling/stretching the brim upwards a bit to see if that helps. If not, you might want to go down a hook size when making the brim to make it more “stiff” and more likely to stick up instead of laying flat. Hope that helps!
