Nothing quite says summer like wearing a crocheted watermelon on your head!

This easy to make and fun to wear watermelon sun hat is a bold yet comfy fashion statement! Made using breathable cotton yarn, the hat is perfect for shielding your head and eyes from the sun without being heavy or itchy. It’s also very easy to make – all you need to know is the single crochet stitch, and how to work in the round!

(Pin it for later!)

When designing this hat, I knew right away that I needed a lightweight cotton yarn that came in lots of assorted colors. I turned to the excellent and very versatile Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, and I am so glad I did! This yarn is just the right weight and texture for a sun hat (and lots of other projects for that matter). It feels sturdy, but doesn’t have so much weight to it that it feels like the type of yarn one would use for a winter hat. I used colors Rose (on Amazon HERE), White, (on Amazon HERE), and Grass (on Amazon HERE). The results were perfect and so watermelon-y!

It’s also worth noting that although this pattern calls for Rose, Lion Brand also offers this yarn in Red, which you could substitute for Rose if you wanted. I think the hat would look really cute with a red top or a pink top – so someone should give the red a shot to see how it comes out!

This hat pattern is for teens/adults, but I have some great news – a KIDS VERSION is coming soon! That’s right, you can not only enjoy your very own watermelon sun hat, but the kiddos in your life can, as well! How cute would mommy and me (or auntie and me, godmother and me, grandma and me, etc.) sun hats be?!

Ready to crochet some sweet summer goodness? Then let’s get started!
