Face Mask for Kids & Adults – Crochet Pattern
Pin it for later!
Who said face masks had to be plain? This easy, basic face mask pattern – kids and adult sizes included – is perfect for customizing with your own creative touches. Since the masks are made using lightweight yarn (and lined with lightweight fabric), they aren’t overly warm for summer and early fall months, either! The pattern includes instructions on how to personalize your mask in fun ways, such as designing it to look like a cupcake, watermelon, strawberry, pizza, and more! What a great way to dress up the idea of wearing face coverings in public!
Face Mask for Kids & Adults
In light of events taking place around the world this year, it’s become more and more apparent to many of us that face masks might be an accessory that will be required (or at least encouraged) for a while longer. (Please note: I am not a medical professional and make no claims about medical effectiveness of these masks – to learn more about this subject, please visit the CDC’s website here).
But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun with our masks, right?! Kids and adults alike can enjoy these comfy, cute masks. And crocheters of all skill levels can have fun with this pattern, too – since it only uses a few basic stitches, and works up fairly quickly, it’s sure to be a hit with both beginners and experienced crocheters!
Another great thing about these masks is that they can be decorated as simply or as elaborately as you like. Do you want a mask that looks like a cupcake? No problem! Or is it a simple solid mask, adorned with a subtle applique, that floats your boat? That’s great too!
Speaking of masks with appliques, you might recognize the flowers on some of the masks shown here. The sunflower is taken from my Tiny Wedding Cake Pattern, and the rose on my Rose Gold mask is a teeny, tiny version of the rose in my Rose Granny Square Pattern! Just make the rose with a category “2” yarn (I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Glamour in Gold) following the first few rounds!
Wondering which yarns are best to make this lightweight face mask? I used a great line of baby yarn that’s fine and has a nice little spring to it due to being part nylon. It’s called Anne Geddes baby yarn, and you can find some on Amazon HERE! Sadly, this yarn is discontinued and could be difficult to find in every color. A great substitute is The Hook Nook “Small Stuff” yarn!

Customizing Masks
The mask can also be made using solid colors with no added ornaments, or it can be made in solid colors with a small applique as an accent. Below are ideas/instructions on ways in which the masks can be customized.
Watermelon Mask
Follow the steps for the Adult or Kids Mask using Ladybug and Grass, and sew several small “v” shapes using Night-Night.
Strawberry Mask
Follow the steps for the Adult or Kids Mask using Ladybug and Grass, and sew several small vertical lines using Lily.
Pizza Mask
Follow the steps for the Adult or Kids Mask using Bumble and Ladybug. To make Pepperoni, make a magic ring, 6 sc in ring. 2 sc in each st around, fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. (12 sc) Use long tail to sew Pepperoni to Mask.
Rainbow Mask
Follow the steps for the Adult or Kids Mask. Change colors every 10 rows for Adult Mask. For Kids Mask, change colors after Row 9, then change colors every 8 rows. Use last color for 9 rows. Follow color sequence: Jam, Bluejay, Grass, Bumble, Tangerine, Ladybug. Use Lily for Edging and Straps.
Cupcake Mask
Follow the steps for the Adult or Kids Mask, but change colors from Teddy to Lily during first Row, halfway through (7 sts for Adult Mask, 6 sts for Kids Mask). On all Rows past this, change colors in same place when working back and forth on each row. Work Teddy rows in BLO. Use various other colors to slip stitch Sprinkles onto Mask. With Ladybug, make a magic ring and 6 sc in ring for Cherry.

They are really cute. But, they are most likely too warm to wear for very long.

Thank you Susan! I hear you about the warmth; that’s why I chose very light weight yarn and light weight knit fabric for the lining in this pattern! I’ve been wearing them out this summer and they’re very comfy!
