12 Weeks of Christmas: Arctic Avocado Ornament Crochet Pattern
The holidays are almost here, and who doesn’t love a little comfort food this time of year? It’s also important to keep healthy, though. So here’s the perfect balance to the two: the Arctic Avocado! It’s cute and based on a yummy health food! Fans of easy amigurumi patterns will love making this tree ornament, and it’s the perfect holiday gift / decor for those who love avocado and all the yumminess that can come from it (i.e. guacamole)!

Why an avocado? Well, if you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know that it’s very difficult for me to design anything ordinary! Yes, I love making Christmas ornaments – but no, I can’t stick to only holiday-themed critters and characters (although I love making those every now and then, too)! If you’ve checked out my Amigurumi Taco Ornament or Amigurumi Toast Ornament, then you know how much I love including random kawaii foods in my holiday pattern lineup! So, why not add another food that’s a favorite for so many, as well as being fun and easy to crochet?

As with most of my ornament patterns, this one is fun, quick and easy. It’s made in three total parts, each of which only use a few basic crochet stitches. So you will have plenty of time to make the other ornaments in my 12 Weeks of Christmas series, and/or catch up on all the prep and errands that this season brings!
Another great thing about this pattern is that it’s very versatile. You can make your very own avocado for your tree this year, or make a whole bunch as gifts for everyone on your Christmas gift list. How fun would this be to give to someone who loves food, vegetables, guacamole, cooking, etc.?! The possibilities are endless!

Supplies
Size D-3 / 3.25 mm crochet hook
1 skein each of Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Kelly Green and Toffee (substitute Chocolate for Toffee if necessary)
1 skein Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Baby in Sweet Pea
Small amounts of Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Black and Pink for Smile and Blush
1 pair of 6 mm safety eyes
Fiberfill stuffing
Yarn Needle
Scissors
Ornament hook or small amount of yarn/thread for hanging
Abbreviations
Ch = chain
Rep = repeat
Rnd(s) = round(s)
Sc = single crochet
Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together
St(s) = stitch(es)
Gauge
Exact gauge is not essential to this project.
Size
Finished piece measures about 4.5 inches in length.
Instructions
Front
With Sweet Pea, ch 3.
Row 1 – sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in next st. Ch 1, turn (2 sc)
Row 2 – 2 sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (4 sc)
Row 3 – sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (4 sc)
Row 4 – 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn (6 sc)
Row 5 – sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (6 sc)
Row 6 – 2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn (8 sc)
Rows 7 – 8 – sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (8 sc)
Row 9 – 3 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, 3 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn (12 sc)
Rows 10 – 15 – sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (12 sc per row)
Row 16 – sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn (10 sc)
Row 17 – sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (10 sc)
Row 18 – sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn (8 sc)
Row 19 – sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn (8 sc)
Row 20 – sc2tog over next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog over last 2 sts. Ch 1 (6 sc)
Edging
Sc around entire piece, making about 17 sc on each side and working across top and bottom rows. (42 sc)
Fasten off.
Back
With Kelly Green, rep Rows 1 – 20 and Edging from Front.
Continued Edging
Rnd 1 – sc around entire piece, making 3 sc at each corner. Do not ch or turn at end of rnd (48 sc)
Rnds 2 – 3 – sc around entire piece. Do not ch or turn and end of rnd (48 sc)
Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.
Pit
This piece is worked in continuous rnds; do not join. You may wish to use a stitch marker and move it up at the beginning of each new rnd.
Rnd 1 – with Toffee, make a magic ring. 6 sc in ring (6 sc)
Rnd 2 – 2 sc in each st around (12 sc)
Rnd 3 – 2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep around (18 sc)
Rnd 4 – sc in each st around (18 sc)
Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.
Finishing
Attach safety eyes on Front. With Black, make a small “v” between eyes for Smile. With Pink, make two small horizontal lines below each eye for Blush. Lightly stuff Pit and sew to bottom center of Front. Tie off ends on back of Front.
Stuff Back. With tail left over from Back, sew Front to Back. Weave in ends or tie knot and hide inside sts.
