As you might have guessed from reading through some of my posts on this blog, I am a REALLY big fan of amigurumi!  You may have also noticed that most of my amigurumi is worked in a spiral round.  For many years, I used to start my rounds with the good ol’ method of chaining 2, and making 6 single crochet stitches in the second chain from hook.  While that will still give you a perfectly fine round shape, it always left that tiny gap right at the center of my beginning round.  I just can’t tell you how much more polished it looks to start your round with a magic ring instead!  And since I can’t tell you enough, I’ve decided I’m going to show you!

Ready to say goodbye to that pesky “chain 2” gap forever?  Then let’s get started!

Step 1

Start by wrapping your yarn around your index and middle fingers, with the shorter end of the yarn on the front of your hand, and the longer end behind your hand.

Step 2

Wrap the longer end up around your two fingers.

Step 3

Insert your hook between your two fingers, and use it to bring the yarn-wrap from Step 2 underneath yarn-wrap from Step 3.  You basically just pulled up a loop through another loop – the larger loop (made from the yarn-wrap of Step 2) will be your ring.  It almost kind of looks like the beginning of a slip knot, as you can see from the third photo below!

Step 4

Then, make a chain-1 to secure the ring.

Step 5

Work the number of single crochet into the center ring that your pattern instructs you to – I usually single crochet 6 into the ring.

Step 6

Use the shorter end to pull the ring closed.

Now the ring is closed!

After this step, I usually join my current stitch to the first stitch of the round with a slip stitch.  Without the slip stitch, the circle looks a little unfinished.

Great job!
