This adorable and easy to make granny square is the perfect way to show your love for the pet(s) in your life! You could make it into a scarf, blanket, pillow, tote bag – the possibilities are endless! It works up quickly and can be customized with all kinds of colors. What a great gift idea for any holiday or occasion!

The pet lover in your life will love the cute style of this little paw print square. It has the classic paw print motif, and the print could be either a dog’s or a cat’s – so it’s great for both dog lovers and cat lovers!

*Update! Here is a small lapghan I made using these paw print granny squares, and a scarf I made using the squares. They are assembled as shown in the pattern. I added a simple double crochet border to the afghan give it a more finished look, and some fringe to the scarf. So you could turn your Paw Print Squares into just about anything!

Or how about making something special using these squares for the pets in your life? What a cute dog or cat blanket or cushion/bed you could make from these squares! You could even make matching blanket sets for the pets and their humans!!!

(Pin it for later!)

The squares also work really well as little coasters if you decide not to put them together to make them into another project. How cute would a set of customized paw print coasters be?!

The squares shown here are made using all different colors of Vanna’s Choice. I really wanted to emphasize how easy they are to customize! Even if you’re assembling them into one project, it’s fun to have all different colors for variety! How about making them in your favorite team colors? Or the school colors of the person you’re gifting it to? You can really get creative with the color choices on this one and make it your own! You can find the lovely neutral grey that I used as the base color for all my squares, Linen, on Amazon HERE! Below are all the other fun colors I decided to use for the actual paw prints, too!

I think these squares come out great with medium weight yarn – it makes them so versatile for all kinds of projects. But if you want to change it up a bit, I bet they would also look great using chunky yarn and a larger hook! What a cozy project you could make by chunkifying these squares!!!

So who’s ready to to “emBARK” on this crochet pattern journey? I know I am – let’s do this right MEOW!

Looking for a PDF copy of this pattern? You can find it in my shop HERE!

Hi again, I think I see the problem – was it that the last rep was not in “*”? The formatting on my blog changes anything in asterisks to italics for some reason lol, hope that clears up the issue! Thanks!

Hi, the pattern is cute. On the last row, I think you should do half doubles around entire piece, not just corners. Then it will be more square, then with points on the corners.

Hi Betty Jean, I’m glad you like the pattern! Thanks for your feedback about the last row, as well! 🙂

Reading the pattern for the last row, is there only 3 corners? The picture shows 4

    1. Melissa

      January 20, 2020 at 8:12 pm

Good question, Bonita! So the “repeat” only happens twice and then the next line tells you how to make the last corner of the square: “[2 Hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc] in next st, sc in next 7 sts”. Hope that helps! Thanks! Melissa

Please help. Row 4. Tried 4 times. After I finish the 4th paw fo I skip any stitches before I begin the contrasting color? At end of round except row 4 do I join to 1st stitch? Thank you

    1. Melissa

      February 24, 2020 at 1:40 pm

Hi Dee! Thanks for asking! So after the fourth paw pad is made, you do skip 3 stitches before moving on to the next step! It’s part of the repeat “*[Hdc, 2 Dc, tr, 2 Dc, Hdc] in next st. Sk 3 sts.*”. You do not join at the end of Rnd 4 because after that you’ll be working around the paw pads you just made! Hope that helps – please let me know if you have any other questions! Thank you! ~ Melissa

Is it possible to do this in worsted weight yarn, if so what changes would I have to make?

    1. Melissa

      March 16, 2020 at 1:32 am

Hi Brenda! The pattern actually calls for worsted weight (medium weight) yarn, so just be sure to check your gauge and you should be fine with worsted weight! 🙂 Thanks and hope you love the pattern! ~ Melissa

Hi! I love this pattern! This is the first actual pattern that I’m working on (I’m a new at crochet) and I have a question about the paws. Do I put all of the stitches for each paw in the same stitch? Or do I spread them out? Thank you for the great pictures, they have really helped!

    1. Melissa

      July 29, 2020 at 12:40 pm

Hi Amy! I’m so glad you’re working on this pattern; welcome to crocheting!!! That’s a great question – for each little paw pad, all of the stitches are put into one stitch. When it’s time to move on to the next paw pad, the pattern tells you to skip three stitches; then you repeat what you just did (all the stitches in one stitch, skip three stitches) to make the other paw pads. I hope that helps!! Hope you have fun with your paw print!!!

Thank you so much! Your explanation really helped and everything made a lot more sense! I am having a lot of fun working on this pattern and am so glad that I found it! Hopefully mine will look as good as yours after a couple more tries (right now I’m celebrating how the paws turned out- now onto finishing)! Thanks again!

On row 2, are we supposed to join the first and last dc with a sl st? Great Pattern!

    1. Melissa

      November 15, 2020 at 2:31 am

Hi Lyle! Yes, sorry, there should be a join with sl st at the end of Rnd 2! Sorry about that! Glad you’re enjoying the pattern and thanks for bringing it to my attention! 🙂 Melissa

I just finished my first paw square, and it looks pretty good. But I am confused about how to fasten off while switching colors (such as in Rnd 2). Do I just cut the yarn and weave in the end? Or should I actually fasten it off? If so, how? Thank you! I’m excited about this pattern!

    1. Melissa

      December 14, 2020 at 2:37 am

Hi Ellie, so glad you are happy with your paw print square! As for fastening off, I usually cut my yarn right after changing colors and leave a few inches for weaving in ends later – that’s what’s meant by “fasten off” in the pattern! Hope that helps! Thank you 🙂 Melissa

Hi, I was wondering if the chain 2 is supposed to be counted as the first double crochet in each round?

    1. Melissa

Hi Christine! Great question – it does not! Hope that helps! ~ Melissa 🙂

So we chain 2 and in that same space do 2 dc?

        1. Melissa

          January 23, 2022 at 8:30 pm

Yes! Ch 2 and make your 2 dc right into the stitch directly below your ch 2.

this pattern is not the same as the original picture of the paw print. The one shown initially has like a rounded triangle center.

Hi Sharon, it sounds like you may have found an image of another granny square that was incorrectly linked to this blog post. I suggest you do a Google Reverse Image Search on the image you found to find the triangular paw print pattern that you’re looking for. Thanks! ~ Melissa

I have been crocheting for 62 years. I have never had issues with a pattern till now. Row 5 is worded so squirrely that I can’t seem to get the corners right. It’s very frustrating. Maybe you can do something about that to make it more clear. At this point I’m about to give up on it.

    1. Melissa

      June 15, 2023 at 11:29 am

Hi Karin, I’m happy to help with Row 5. Here’s a breakdown of it to try and explain it a bit further:

So on that repeated section of Round 4, the first few contrast color (non-paw-print) stitches are skipped – “…Sk 3 sts.* Rep from * to * 3 more times, switching back to contrast color in last st of rep.” The second photo below that section in the pattern shows where to start making double crochets. Sometimes that trips people up and they end up getting the wrong amount of stitches at the end because they don’t skip those first three.

Also, “*Dc in next 2 sts, 2 Dc in next st.* Rep from * to * 5 more times.” – it’s actually a total of 6 times that the part in * is done, but the “5 more times” sometimes makes it look like it’s a total of 5.

For Rnd 5, you’re working into, and in between, the paw prints, and then making the corners of the square. Just let me know what’s not adding up there and I can do my best to clear it up!
