Is it a purse? Is it a gift basket? Is it a tote for yarn or books? The answer is YES to all of these questions! This adorable Basket Bag is so versatile and easy to make that it might be hard to resist making a whole bunch! It’s just as perfect as a girl/tween purse as it is for a yarn tote! The possibilities are endless!

Pin it for later!

Handmade basket bags seem to be all the rage right now, as a quick Etsy search will demonstrate. Designed to have a similar look to a straw or wicker bag, this crocheted basket bag has all the charm of a traditional basket bag but the comfort and cuteness of an item made with chunky yarn!

It’s really up to your imagination when it comes to how to use this bag! I designed it with a few uses in mind to give you some ideas, though. It’s an absolutely darling purse for girls or tweens! Its cute look and ideal size make it perfect for carrying around a brush and comb, a few lip glosses, a small water bottle, and even some small books (it fits my Sailor Moon manga SO well haha!!!).

I also thought it would be really cute as a gift basket, hence the lotions and gels shown inside the baskets in the photos! In the time it takes to go to your local store and buy a gift bag, you could make a ton of progress or possibly even be finished crocheting this sweet little handmade one!

And finally, what kind of yarncrafter would I be if I didn’t at least try to use this as a way to transport yarn?! It fits 1 large skein and 1 smaller skein perfectly! Add a pair of scissors and your favorite hook and you’re good to go!

The yarn used for this pattern is beautiful and makes the project go so quickly! I used Lion Brand Hometown USA on the brown basket, and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick on the beige basket. The basket turns out a pretty similar size regardless of which one you use, and they’re both chunky yarns that come in tons of colors, so feel free to get creative and customize! Unfortunately, the color way I used for the brown basket is discontinued, but there is a similar color called “Salem Creek” that would be a great substitute! Find it on Amazon HERE, and Fisherman (beige basket) on Amazon HERE!

And it’s my personal opinion that the furry/fuzzy trims on these baskets are just the absolute perfect finishing touch! You can find Lion Brand Go For Faux in Baked Alaska (trim on the brown basket) on Amazon HERE, and Homespun in Peony (a color way similar to the one used on the beige basket) on Amazon HERE!

So who’s ready to weave….err…crochet some beautiful baskets? Let’s go!
